My favorite part of trying out a new recipe is opening the oven when the timer beeps to see if what I put together came out as anticipated. I hop from foot to foot in front of the stove anxiously waiting like a new father to see his baby for the first time. I get nervous that it won't taste good or worse, it wont look good! (I have this issue with serving ugly food to my "taste testers" aka friends and family) And each time I succeed I pump my fist in the air and do a little hula dance of excitement as I pull the cookie sheet or cake pan or cupcake tin out and place my masterpiece on the counter to cool as I grin from ear to ear. THIS is why I love to bake. It thrills me each time, like little else does. I heard a quote off of the movie "Julie and Julia" and I feel like it sums baking up perfectly for me. "You know what I love about cooking? I love that after a day when nothing is sure, and when I say nothing, you can come home and add egg yokes to chocolate and sugar and milk it will get thick. It's such a comfort." Coming home from a night of dispatching and getting dirty up to my elbows in flour, to produce a delicious piece of art that says "I achieved something today" is my comfort. And to feed it to others is my joy.
